February Book Roundup

Another month, another five books! Yes, part of my reading goals for 2022 is not to focus on numbers, but it was still satisfying to keep up the same momentum. It still doesn't matter too much, as per the goals I set out for myself, but it's still a nice feeling.

I finally finished the last of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary novel collection I picked up in Marie Curie. The final book was The Silent Stars Go by Ben Abnett, an eleventh Doctor adventure featuring The Ice Warriors. I really enjoyed this one, which was a nice surprise since I tried reading this one before in 2013 and couldn't get through it. I have definitely changed as a reader since then it seems!

I also gave my first five star rating of the year! I am a sucker for autobiographies, particularly ones that give insights into the inner workings of the making of Doctor Who. (My reading habits of 2022 has certainly centred around Who, as you'll see even more in a moment). Elizabeth Sladen's autobiography was particularly bittersweet considering she passed away before it was published. This gave the book a real intimacy that I enjoyed. Of course, I'd rather have Mrs Sladen with us, but her book was a truely beautiful parting gift she didn't realise she was giving.

I dived into audio books properly for the first time this month. I definitely prefer reading books I can hold physically, but listening to audio is perfect for multi tasking. I listened to Spare Parts while working and The Holy Terror while enjoying a bath (both Doctor Who stories heh) and I really liked them both. I intend to listen to more, however not as often as I'll read physical books.

Finally, I read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Speak was a powerful novel that I believe needs experienced more than explained. It has been on numerous banned books lists in the past, which to me makes it nearly mandatory to look into. So most definitely check it out if you're even a little bit interested.
