A Note About The Hunger Games

I want to preface this statement with the following: I am so absolutely happy for anyone who has had their love for THG reignited by ABOSAS and SOTR. This isn't commentary on your enjoyment, I'm just venting personal woes.

It's such a complex situation to be in to adore and venerate the original Hunger Games trilogy while simultaneously having no interest whatsoever in these new books. My adoration starts and ends with Katniss' story. It always has and probably always will.

I know I am not anyone to comment on what authors choose to write, trust me, I know my opinion is insignificant. I just can't help being disappointed because a decade ago Suzanne Collins said she was leaving Panem, and I was so excited to see what stories she would write next. But instead we ended up back where we started, and for many that was amazing (Again, I'm really happy for you!)

I'm not as loud as I used to be about things I don't like. I know I made videos about ABOSAS on my YouTube channel back in those beginning days, but I have grown since then. Or at least I hope I have. It's okay to express disappointment, I just didn't know how to do it in a healthy manner. I was young and dumb and COVID was around the corner. Not a great combination.

My love for the original Hunger Games trilogy will never die. Peeta Mellark is my favorite fictional character of all time and I intend one day to get a tattoo to represent him. I will always be open to talking about those first three books. I just don't have any investment in the prequels because I-personally!-don't believe those stories needed told. I just don't want this disinterest to be conflated with a disinterest in the original three books.

I hope this hasn't sounded too bitchy or whiny. Tone can be hard to convey over text. Just know when I say that I'm happy for you if you love these new books, I truly mean it. No sarcasm is intended in those words. It's a feeling I wish I got from them, but simply don't. But that's okay. We all come from different walks and avenues of life with a variety of opinions and circumstances that brought us to this fandom. As long as we're gentle with each other, it'll be okay.

Yours sincerely,

Erin
